My Focus
Initially, I assess the student’s goals and desires. Then, I help them with a warm-up routine and spend time working on tunes. I teach sight-reading, chord/scale relationships, and encourage all of my students to improvise. Classical, Jazz, Latin, Funk, Reggae, Hip-hop, Rock, and other genres will be explored.
We will work on musical vocabulary, modes [and how they relate to minor or major scales], altered scales [and where to use them], transposition, intonation, overall tone, sight-singing, and rhythmic breathing. I have an extensive music collection as well, so one can expect a lot of reference material [mp3s, CDs, and records]. I will also throw in a bit of music history for good measure.
Most of my students excel in the classroom and find themselves moving up the ranks to first chair, getting solos, and winning awards. I charge a reasonable rate, I’m flexible with scheduling, and I’m willing travel to work with my students. I welcome students of all ages and skill levels on saxophone, guitar, piano, and music theory.
